Not really much of a blog here; more of a happy memory involving a coincidence of the calendar.
As is the case this year, 1984 was a leap year. On February 29, I played the Old Course at St Andrews for the first time, this being a few months before Seve Ballesteros would win the Open there. I played with (now Sir) Michael Bonallack, secretary (as the title was then) of the R&A and a colleague of his, George Wilson.
The picture tells the story. Two birdies and one double-bogey on the front nine; six pars and three bogeys coming home. I made more putts in those days than I do now (isn’t that the same for everyone?) and I can clearly recall the three-footer I holed for par on the 18th to break 80. A day to remember, indeed.
