Something over seven years ago now we went on a family holiday to Mexico, close to the well-known vacation destination of Cancun. The resort was the Rosewood Mayakoba, one of three (there are now four) such establishments which share the pleasures of the El Camaleón Golf Club. You can see the golf course for yourself over the next four evenings, when Sky Sports shows the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Deep bunker on the opening hole, though a rejig of the front nine means this is the 7th in the tournament

The tournament created a bit of history in 2013, later on in the year we were there, when it became the first PGA Tour event to be played outside the United States and Canada. (For these purposes we shall ignore the Open Championship, which is obviously an official tournament on the PGA Tour.)

This is the ‘real’ par-three 7th on the course you would play, albeit it’s the 4th for Koepka & Co this week

The course was designed by Greg Norman and while it is beside the sea it is also laid out over eight miles of fresh water canals amid mangrove plantations. If your ball goes in one of those, it’s definitely gone.

This is the 155-yard 15th whichever way you play the course – and another gloriously scenic short hole

The defending champion this week is Brendan Todd. Among those hoping to get the title off him is Brooks Koepka, twice US Open and twice USPGA champion. I shall be watching with some interest – and happy memories.
